Travel Report 2016

A video documents the inauguration of a water tank at Kinze Primary School on May 19, 2016, built by the mothers and funded by the Realschule Vorsfelde in Wolfsburg. This allows around 150 girls to attend school instead of having to fetch water.

Today we set off for one of the areas of Makueni County that ranks among the poorest regions of Kenya. The drive takes two hours through dusty terrain to Ititu Primary School.

On our arrival, the students in blue school uniforms welcome us with song. A purple cloth is removed to reveal a sponsor plaque: “FUNDED BY THE STUDENTS OF CHRISTOPHORUS HIGHSCHOOL IN THE TOWN OF BRUNSWICK/GERMANY”. An Anglican priest blesses the tank, and the first tap is turned on.

Under a large shade tree, the students perform dances and songs about water. A football is presented as a gift. The students climb onto the tank, on which a sign reads “ASANTE SANA” (Swahili for “thank you”).

Afterwards we visit the Kiambani sand dam, where women welcome us with singing and dancing. Community representatives speak about the water shortage. The priest blesses the dam and thanks the builders, ADSE staff, and the donors from the Lessing-Gymnasium in Braunschweig.
